Cannon, Hal – Nothin’ Lastin’

Okehdokee Records , CD, 2022

Stylistically, Cannon calls his genre American Desert Music. The sound is sparse, mirage-like with an underlying bed of lonesome. When he set out to make the record Cannon wanted all original songs with his voice and banjo as a common thread. Cannon enjoys singing with women so he asked Mollie OBrien, Martha Scanlan, Kate MacLeod and Victoria Lagerstrom to join in. He also enlisted his musical compadres, Greg Istock and Eli Wrankle from 3hattrio to play on various cuts and expanded that circle with Tim OBrien, Rich Moore, Skip Gorman, Charlotte Bell, Phillip Bimstein, Dave Tate and others, adding instruments along the way.

“The new record lifts us like a series of melodic prayers rising up off of the high desert. Songs of love, family life, war, murderous roads in Indian country, and more…with a little red wine poured over the mix to flavor the punch.” Tom Russell
